Manito Art League Workshop: Mixed-Media Mystery Mural

  • Required Supplies: Participants are asked to bring material of their respective medium (paints, pencils, brushes etc.) There will be supplies to share if participants do not have material of their own. Paper will be supplied; however, if your work is paper or canvas specific, please bring a favorite 10x12 inch surface upon which to work.

Presented by Jane Schmaltz. The mural will be collaboration by all workshop attendees. Each participant will be given a section of a photo to either copy or “interpret” in the medium of his/her choice. At the end of the session, all pieces will be assembled to create the “photo” artwork as a whole. Bring a lunch. Public (non-Manito Art League members) welcome for a $10 fee.

Manito Art League Workshop: Wild and Woolly — Traditional Felting

  • Required Supplies: Participants are asked to bring a waterproof apron, old towels, rubber gloves, a bucket or dishpan, a bamboo mat (if they have one) or a 3-foot piece of bubble wrap (small bubble).

This workshop with Mary Burns will begin with a visual overview of the 3,000-year-old history of felt making that concludes with examples of contemporary felters’ works. Participants will transform beautifully dyed wool batts and fibers into felt through a “wet felting” process. Participants will concentrate on the fundamentals of wet felting in 2-D, creating landscape pieces that may be hung or may become the basis for making book covers, small bags, table coverings or mats. The instructor will explain how to make pre-felts and provide details on the best types of wool to use for felting. Bring a lunch.

Plein Air is a French word meaning “in open air.” The instructors (Florie Enders, Ken Drawz and Joan Stephens) will show and discuss materials and equipment used with various media (oil, pastel, watercolor, and acrylics) that are suitable for use in the outdoors.

After answering questions and concluding discussion, the group will go outdoors for a demonstration. Participants will “give it a try” with the medium of their choice.
