Art has come to mean for me a way of clarifying life. It is simply a way to see life in an attentive way that enhances and deepens understanding. I paint because I must. I have always been drawn to art and after teaching school for 32 years, I took up watercolor painting in my retirement.

After about 10 years of workshops and practice I began to show and sell some of my work. I am a teacher by nature and by training so it was a natural progression that after a while I began to share my love of painting with others. I have taught journaling and sketching, beginning water color techniques and acrylic paper painting. I split my time between Lac du Flambeau in summer and Florida in the winter. I am a member of four art leagues and enjoy en plein air painting.

As with most artists I have enjoyed branching out to try different mediums … mostly acrylic and collage. Watercolor will always be my first love. You can follow my journey on my blog http://ginnystiles.blogspot.com

Lakeland Art League Workshop: Paper Painting Acrylic/Collage

Held at the Woodruff Community Center from 9am- 2:30pm, join artist Ginny Stiles for Paper Painting in Acrylic and Collage, a unique combination of painting with gloss medium using torn hand-painted papers on gessoed boards or canvas boards. Participants should have some basic experience with acrylic as a medium. I will be using techniques developed by Elizabeth St. Hilaire Nelson (you can visit her blog at http://elizabethsthilairenelson.blogspot.com) for some examples of the kind of art we will be enjoying.

Cost is $15 for Lakeland Art League Members; $25/non-members. Pre-registration by September 9 by calling Leslie Johnson, workshop coordinator, at (715) 453-1652.

For as long as I can remember, I’ve had a love for art. In school many teachers encouraged me and my high school art teacher helped by getting me two scholarships. After four years at Layton School of Art in Milwaukee, WI, I graduated in advertising, illustration and design. Working for advertising, television and display companies gave me the experience I needed to open my own advertising agency. After thirteen successful years, I sold the company and purchased Wausau Signs, Inc. In 1999 Wausau Signs was sold and I semi-retired to Minocqua giving me the opportunity to pursue the arts.

Like other successful artists I have a strong competitive streak and I am always competing with myself striving to surpass the preceding work. My art studio is open for showing by appointment.
